For our next blog in the ‘Our Route to Renewables’ series, we spoke to Ivelina Nikolova about her journey to becoming a HR Coordinator within the Red Rock team.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was growing up, I wanted to be a Therapist or Counsellor. I was always interested in what shapes people—their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours—and how these influence their lives and relationships.
During my education, I got involved in peer support programs focused on mental health and wellbeing. I had the chance to mentor others, work alongside police and health professionals, and help deliver training on topics like online safety, preventing human trafficking, and managing conflict. These experiences helped shape my values—empathy, courage, and integrity—which continue to be important to me today.
What did you do when you left school?
I moved from Bulgaria to Scotland to study Psychology at university, drawn by my desire to understand people and make a difference. Contrary to popular belief, I did not learn to read people’s minds, but I certainly learned a lot about thought processes and behavioural patterns through conducting experiments and observations. During my studies, I volunteered with a non-profit organisation, providing one-to-one support to individuals struggling with mental health. This experience reinforced my passion for helping others and honed the interpersonal skills I use today.
After graduating with a joint degree in Psychology & Marketing, I worked in Children’s Centres in England, supporting families to build brighter futures for themselves. My team there recognised my potential in Human Resources, pointing out how my skills and values aligned with the profession and how I can make difference in organisational setting as well. This realisation set me on the path toward a career in HR, where I could focus on fostering positive organisational cultures and driving meaningful change—a goal that ties directly into my current role in renewables.
How did you move into renewables and join Red Rock?
My HR journey began at a small consultancy. I gained hands-on experience working with over 60 clients across various industries and some of the best aspiring HR professionals, and it confirmed that I’d chosen the right career path.
When I started exploring new opportunities, Red Rock stood out immediately. While I was new to renewables, I was drawn to the people, values, and sense of purpose at Red Rock. The more I learned about the sector, the more excited I became. I saw the chance to contribute not just internally, but to a larger goal of creating a greener future.
How easy was it to move into the renewables sector?
I found the transition smooth, thanks to Red Rock’s well-structured recruitment process and the learning opportunities provided in my first weeks. Asking questions and building relationships early on helped me settle in quickly.
Moving from a consultancy to an in-house role was an adjustment, as I now work directly with employees rather than clients. But at Red Rock, I feel like part of the team, which has been incredibly rewarding.
What lessons have you brought to your current role?
My background has taught me the value of authenticity and integrity. HR professionals often face stereotypes, but being genuine helps build trust and fosters open conversations. People are more likely to seek support, address issues, and respond positively to challenges when they feel heard and respected.
I’ve also brought a focus on organisation and processes, ensuring they are efficient and people-centred.
What does your day-to-day look like? What’s the best part of your role?
The HR stereotype of routine and monotony doesn’t ring true for me! My days involve a mix of recruitment, performance management, training, and development. The best part is collaborating with a supportive, thoughtful team focused on helping individuals reach their potential.
At Red Rock, we celebrate diversity through various EDI programmes. As someone that moved away from home 8 years ago, it is a privilege to work for an organisation that frequently provides opportunities for us to share different cultural experiences and celebrate each other.
Collaboration is key and I work with various departments daily, creating an opportunity to learn more from experienced professionals in the sector. Whether it’s a coffee chat or a knowledge-sharing session, there’s always something new to learn.
What would you say to anyone considering a career in renewables?
A career in renewables offers purpose and a sense of belonging. Whether you’re in HR or another field, you’re contributing to a greater goal while helping others thrive. It’s a dynamic and rewarding industry with opportunities for growth, networking, and celebrating successes. If you want to make a difference, renewables might be the perfect place for you.
